It can repeatedly happen that we do not transmit anything for quite a while. Our long-range aim is to transmit more regularly as time goes by. Since at the moment everything has to happen beside our work commitments, it will only be possible to build up schoenstatt-tv very slowly. Please have patience!
Solution: In order to find out if something is being transmitted, look at the start page or on the Livestream page for announcements of forthcoming transmissions. In the Mediathek you will find the archived films that have already been transmitted.
Your browser (i.e. the programme that gives you access to internet pages) will need a definite expansion, the so-called “Flash Plug-in”, if it is to transmit films. The current version (and it must be at least 9.3) can be downloaded free on the Internet page of the producer, Adobe.
Solution: It is quite simple to install the Flash Plug-in and will take only a few minutes. On the start page of www.adobe.com click on the download link for the Flash Player and confirm that you want to download it on the following page. Double click on the data that is downloaded into your computer and follow the instructions by accepting all the other suggestions that appear.
Livestream has to send a film to each viewer in small data packages from a central transmitting station. Depending on the power of the transmitting computer and how quickly the Internet connection functions, a film can be sent to more (or less) viewers at the same time.
Even though the capacity of our streaming partner is good, there is an upper limit to its technical capabilities. We can only guess when this limit has been reached and by how many simultaneous viewers, and it also depends to some extent on the time of day. From our personal experience we know that the number of viewers, which can be seen on the top right of the screen, is often incorrect.
Solution: Unfortunately it is not possible to change this situation at the moment because of the costs. However, the Internet is developing rapidly and continuously, and we hope that in future there will be possibilities we can afford that will enable us to increase the number of viewers at any one time.
You need a rather fast Internet connection if the pictures are to be transmitted in rapid succession, and so that the film doesn’t pause repeatedly for a brief space of time. The reason for this is that a great deal of information is sent to your computer in a relatively brief viewing window. If this doesn’t arrive on time, the computer pauses and both the picture and the sound begin to jerk.
Unless you have a DSL connection (Broadband or wifi) you will probably not enjoy the video clips. The maximum speed of a telephone modem and ISDN connection is insufficient for an undisturbed transmission.
Solution: Unfortunately the only solution is to change over to DSL or wifi. However, this isn’t possible everywhere and costs money. Besides this you can at best see to it that other data are not being downloaded at the same time via your Internet connection, for example, a Windows or Virus scanner Update.
Your computer needs a certain capacity, that is, the capacity of your processor and memory cannot be too limited. Unless the computer can process the data arriving from the Internet swiftly, the downloading of the film will also be jerky. We have not yet discovered exactly what capacity you need in your computer, but if your computer is more than ten years old and you get annoyed because it takes so long to open a programme or react to your input, it is probable that your hardware will not be able to cope with video films.
Solution: As a rule you wouldn’t try to build a new processor into your old computer. Such a “heart transplant” only makes sense for a DIY enthusiast who knows what else needs to be built into the computer.
The internal memory can normally be extended or exchanged without too much difficulty by the computer owner – it can be compared with changing a tyre on your car. To remain with the comparison: Before you buy anything you will first have to know exactly what type of tyre your car needs, compare the prices of manufacturers, and see whether your car doesn’t already have the four best tyres. If it has, the best fifth tyre is useless.
It seems that there are a few combinations of computer system software, browsers and plug-ins which make it impossible to show films. Note: If nothing is being transmitted, the video window will be black, but you will be able to see the various control buttons, e.g., stop, play, louder or softer, and in the middle of the window a white loading system. If you only see a black window, your computer has a basic problem.
Solution: Try using another browser, or a more current version of your Internet programme. On Windows computers, for example, Internet Explorer instead of Mozilla Firefox, or vice versa, or as an alternative a Safari browser you can download from www.apple.com. Other possibilities are the Internet programme Opera (www.opera.com) or Chrome (www.google.com).
If you see the control buttons described in point 4, but the video clip doesn’t work although it is being transmitted by Livestream, there is still a further possible exotic fault. It can happen that a firewall in your computer prevents a certain form of data transfer, or (perhaps even more possible), an integrated firewall in your router and/or modem – that is, the equipment that connects your computer, printer, etc., to create a local network and also connects your computer to the internet. Some routers, e.g., in business networks, are configured in such a way out of security concerns that they filter out all material from the Internet that they don’t know, or consider potentially dangerous.
Solution: You can try to deactivate all security configurations temporarily in order to discover if the video clip can then be shown. If it shows that this is in fact the cause of the problem, activate the firewall and other security software again and reduce the configuration only as far as absolutely necessary.
Note: In order to show Livestream your security software has to allow RTMP (Real Time Messaging Protocol) packages. Besides this it has to allow .flv (Flash Video) data. If the clearance Port 1935 is lacking, it could also be a problem.
The whole subject can unfortunately not be clarified in a few brief sentences. If you can’t understand the concepts used, please try to get a friend, or network administrator who can see your configurations to help you. It is very difficult to make useful suggestions from a distance.
